A Wedding Made in Heaven

George L. Faull

A student by the name of Eugene Dalrymple called me this week with a question and brought my attention to Psalms 45, as a Messianic Psalm. This prompted me to preach the following sermon, which is available on tape for $4.00 or on CD for $5.00.

This is a wedding song. It was for the chief musician, to be sung by one of the 24 choirs. This was a song of instruction about “love.” The author instructs us that “His heart is boiling over with a goodly theme about the King. It is about the King’s wedding.

I.          SEE THE KING’S EXCELLENCE: Altogether lovely [verse 2].

A.        Fairer than children of men

B.        This speaks not of Him on earth.

1.                  No beauty that we should desire Him.  [Isaiah 53:2]

2.                  Visage marred above all men.  [Isaiah 52:14]

3.                  This is after his garments smelled of myrrh-aloes when He was buried. [John 19:39]

4.                  This pictures our Lord after His resurrection when He holds the Scepter as a King who has conquered His enemies and is the coronated King.

II.         SEE THE KING’S SPEECH: A perfect man.  [James 2:3].

A.        Grace is poured from His lips.

B.        No man spoke as this Man spoke.  [John 7:13]

1.                  “Be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee.”

2.                  “Fear not” to the fearful

3.                  “Come unto me” to sinners

4.                  “Be healed” to the sick

5.                  “Come forth” to dead

6.                  “Come out” to the demon possessed

7.                  “Be clean” to the leper

8.                  “Only believe” to the anxious

9.                  “Be still” to the tempest

10.             “Rise up!” to the lame

C.        He has “spirit” without measure.  [John 3:34]

D.        Blessed of God forever.

III.        SEE THE KING’S STRENGTH [verses 3-5].

A.        A great warrior

B.        Might, glory, majesty

C.        Triumphs in Truth

D.        Strength under control [meek]

E.        Fights for the right of His cause

F.         Terror in His judgment [word is “sharp”]  [Hebrews 4:12]

G.        So John sees Him after mentioning His marriage.

Revelation 19: 11-16, “11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies [which were] in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

IV.       SEE THE KING’S AUTHORITY [Verses 6-7].

A.        Called God by “God, the Father.”

Hebrews 1:8-9, “8 But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a scepter of righteousness [is] the scepter of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, [even] thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.” The Greek says “thy throne, O The God.”

B.        Rules with scepter of righteousness -  Hates wickedness.

C.        Anointed by God – the Christ – He is Lord of lords and King of kings.

3.                  Revelation 19:6-9, “6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. 7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. 9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”

4.                  Holy attendants brought into the King’s palace.

H.        Holy children will be princes in the earth.

I Peter 2:9, “But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

CONCLUSION:

A greater than Solomon is here.

I Kings 10:1-10, “1 And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions. 2 And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart. 3 And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not [any] thing hid from the king, which he told her not.  4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom, and the house that he had built, 5 And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cup bearers, and his ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.  6 And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom. 7 Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen [it]: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard. 8 Happy [are] thy men, happy [are] these thy servants, which stand continually before thee, [and] that hear thy wisdom. 9 Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice. 10 And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.”

What will you give such a King?

Now, after reading the above sermon, we wish to call to your attention these facts. This passage is recognized by Messianic Jews, early Christians, song writers (Out of the ivory palaces), every commentary I consulted, as well as the inspired writer of the Book of Hebrews, as referring to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Kingdom. This five-fold cord is not easily broken.

So what was Eugene Dalrymple’s question? He asked, “Am I on to something, that it says the strings of an instrument makes the King glad?”

I became the learner and my student became the teacher. I had never noticed this passage before. Why? For the most part, this is because I use the King James Version and the New King James Version. These are the only two translations I can find that do not reveal Christ’s love for the stringed instrument in this verse. Yet the King James Version translates the very same word “with stringed instruments” in: Psalms 150:4. These are the only two times this particular Hebrew word appears in Scripture.

We suggest that the reader read the passage in the New American Standard or the New International Version or Young’s Literal Translation. There we are told that stringed instruments make the King glad.

This means that Jesus, the Messiah, as coronated King, delights in stringed instruments. Who among us is going to disappoint the King that is fairer than the sons of men by forbidding their fellow servants to make Him glad?

A question to our non-instrumental brethren: “Did you read the above sermon on the Psalm and rejoice in this beautiful prophecy of the King? Will you now reject the prophecy as Messianic, since it proves the King is made glad by instrumental music?”

Examine your heart very carefully.

[Thanks, Gene, for your question.]
