Insights About Jonah

Terry Carter

JONAH AND CHRIST CONTRASTED.

A.        Both were sent of God to alien sinners.

B.        Both warned of judgment to come.

C.        In both cases there was pardon for the repentant.

D.        Both slept on a boat during the storm.

E.         Both laid down their life for sinners.

F.         Both had lots cast concerning them.

G.        Both were sacrificed for others' salvation, including those who slew them.

H.        Both testified of the Father.

I.          Both were dead for three days.

J.         In both cases, men saw that they could not save themselves. It took the death of the prophet.

K.        Both were resurrected by the power of the Father after three days.

L.         In both cases men worshiped the Father because of the prophet's sacrificial death.

M.       Both proclaimed that salvation was from the Lord.

N.        Both prayed to God who could saved them from death.

O.        Both were from Galilee. Gathhepher was very close to Nazareth, about 5 miles apart.

John 7:52, "They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet."

P.         Both gave hope to Gentiles.

Q.        In both cases many were saved because of their message.

R.        Both testified before kings.

S.         "Jonah" means "dove, symbol of peace. Christ is the Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His Name shall be called "Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

T.         In both cases a prayer was offered for the "murderers."

U.        Both appeared for 40 days after their "resurrection."

V.        Both went to Hades, but saw no corruption.

JONAH SHOWN AS PICTURE OF CONVERSION

A.        First Jonah was running from God, and was disobeying God's will, an alien sinner.

B.        Troubles arose because of his disobedience [God working to convict him of sin].

C.        He confessed God before men [Confession].

D.        He allows others to put him under the water into a watery grave [Baptism].

E.         He arises a new man from the watery grave. The old man is dead. Now he heads in the opposite direction and obeys God [Repentance and new life].

F.         He goes to Nineveh and proclaims the message of God [Evangelism].

G.        He still needs to grow in brotherly love and compassion [Christian growth, continued repentance].

H.        Notice that Jonah was religious already when he was converted.

If Jonah told Nineveh about his experience with the fish, then they believed or had faith in the resurrected prophet. They believed that the prophet, though dead, arose after three days.

Luke 11:30, "For as Jonah was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation."
