The Third Day - Day Of New Beginning Or Life!

George L. Faull

I Corinthians 15:1-4

“1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"

INTRODUCTION:  The Bible is a fascinating book that contains phenomena that is truly amazing!

Men lean upon things like the Shroud of Turin and the so-called “Bible Code”, which are bogus, as proof of religion.

But this subject is something we can investigate in this article and find out for ourselves.

What does it mean, “raised from the dead on the third day,” according to the scriptures?

There is a law in Hermeneutics called “The Law of First Mention”.

Consider Genesis 1:9-13 with me and see that the Third Day brought life out of dry earth.  A new beginning and set the stage for a new relationship with God – the Creator.

PROPOSITION:  The Phenomenon of the Third Day showing a day of new life and beginnings is consistent throughout scripture.

I.              GENESIS 22:4 – NEW LIFE FOR ISAAC.

“4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.”  Isaac was dead in Abraham’s mind for three days.  But he received him from the dead in a figure…Hebrews 11:19

II.                   GENESIS 30:30ff, 36 – NEW LIFE FOR JACOB – THREE DAY’S JOURNEY FROM LABAN.  JACOB BEGAN BUILDING HIS OWN INHERITANCE.

“30ff…and now when shall I provide for mine own house also? 36 And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.”  New beginnings.

III.                 GENESIS 40:13 – NEW LIFE FOR THE BUTLER; DEATH TO THE BAKER.

“Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.”  Like life from the dead.

IV.                GENESIS 42:17-19 – JOSEPH TOOK HIS BRETHREN OUT OF PRISON, SENDING THEM HOME WITH CORN SAYING – “THIS DO AND YE SHALL LIVE”.

“17 And he put them all together into ward three days.

18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God: 19 If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:”  Like life from the dead.

V.                  EXODUS 3:18 – NEW LIFE FOR ISRAEL AS A NATION AND A DELIVERANCE FROM BONDAGE.

“18 And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.” See also Exodus 5:3 and 8:27.  New beginnings.

VI.                EXODUS 19:15 – MOSES GAVE THE LAW – RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD CHANGED.  NOW GODS’ PEOPLE ARE IN A COVENANT WITH GOD.

“And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.”  Like new life.

VII.              NUMBERS 10:33 – SEARCH AND REST

“And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.”  Rest for God’s people.

VIII.            JOSHUA 1:11 – NEW LIFE OF POSSESSION OF THE PROMISED LAND.  A NEW BEGINNING FOR ISRAEL.

“Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.”

IX.                JOSHUA 2:16, 22 – SPIES HIDDEN FOR THREE DAYS TO SAVE LIFE.

“16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way. 22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.”  Like life from the dead.

X.                  I SAMUEL 20:19 – DAVID DELIVERED FROM DEATH BY JONATHAN

“And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel..”  Like life from the dead.

XI.                I SAMUEL 30:11-13 – DYING SERVANT IS GIVEN NEW LIFE.

“11 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water; 12 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights. 13 And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick.”  Like life from the dead.

XII.              II KINGS 20:5-8 – HEZEKIAH IS HEALED FROM DEATH ON THE THIRD DAY.

“5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD. 6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.  7 And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

8 And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?”

XIII.            ESTHER 4:16 – ISRAEL SAVED AFTER THE THIRD DAY.

“Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.”  Like life from the dead.

XIV.            JONAH 1:17 – THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS.

“Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”

“44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:”

CONCLUSION:  Do you believe that I can show such phenomena from the writings of Shakespeare?

I’ve done this in 15 books by 13 different authors!!!

It’s Friday, but Sunday’s coming.

 It’s Friday!

It’s Friday and the cold, dark shadows

Fall across a weary land;

Lengthening, at last those shadows

Rest upon a bleeding hand.

Friday….and the storm He silenced

Falls with fury on the earth!

Friday…can this be the payment

Needed for my second birth?

Friday…will it last forever

Can the world e’er be the same?

Have they washed away forever

E’n the trace of Jesus’ name?

Friday…and the evening shadows

Steal within my aching soul;

Friday…with despair, depression

Telling me I am not whole.

All my hope seems dead forever,

Then within my silent gloom,

Shine a far and distant glimmer –

Is it coming from a tomb?

Sunday’s coming!  All those shadows

Will be flooded with His light!

Sunday’s sure!…and Heaven rejoices

As they see the garden site!

Sunday! – Oh, my heart is flying!

Yes!  The Victory is won!

Sunday!  Sunday!  We are Victors

For the work on Friday’s done!
