Music Groups In Denominational Churches

George L. Faull

DEAR BROTHER FAULL:

I am in a singing group and my fellow musician wants me to go into denominational churches to sing.   I objected.  They say, “How will they know if we do not teach them?

What do you think?

ANSWER:

I am assuming several things in my answer to you.

1.                 That music draws a crowd to listen to some preaching.

2.                 That people follow singing groups from engagement to engagement.

3.                 That doctrine is important.

4.                 That one Church is not as good as another.

5.                 That we are stewards not only of our talents but our influence.

So, I don’t think you can deny if you go to other Churches:

1.                 You will draw people to hear false teaching.

2.                 You will hear false teaching as well as those who go with you:

3.                 You will be participating in their false teaching, or worship (tongues, demons, women preachers).

4.                 It is rather arrogant to say to your friends that it is all right to come to this church but only when I am here.

5.                 You may have knowledge but others who see you there will be emboldened to attend there and you would have caused them to stumble.  Your liberty must not do that. I Corinthians 8

6.                 You will share in their reward for you bid them God speed.

II John 9-11, “9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.  10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:  11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

7.                 You will be glorifying Christ and praising Him but encouraging them to attend a church with false teaching.

8.                 It will pull Christians from the Church where truth is believed and practiced to hear false teaching.  This is hard to believe that God would accept that as worship and be commendable when it encourages people to leave a true preacher and miss the fellowship of the table just to hear you sing.

9.                 You will be inferring that the false preacher is a Brother in Christ.

10.             It dumbs-down the church, not making a distinction between truth and error.

These are my thoughts.  It has compromise written all over it.  It is dangerous.  They will be having more influence on you than you do them.  You’ll be singing praises to God, but they will be teaching you, and yours, what’s not true.
