The Michael Moore Syndrome

John Waddey

Michael Moore is the Hollywood movie producer whose hatred for America has brought him fame and fortune.  He grew up in a middle class American family, became immensely successful and now devotes his time and energy to maligning and defaming the nation of his birth.  With no appreciation for the nation that has provided him all of his success, he devotes himself to bashing her.  In addition to his anti-America movies, Mr. Moore travels the world telling others, including enemies of our nation, how awful America is.  He sees nothing good in his homeland but can find things to commend the Muslim terrorists.  To anyone who loves America, Mr. Moore is despicable and disgusting.  His ingratitude and lack of patriotism reek of the sewer.

As I read the books and listen to tapes of our champions of change, I detect a similar spirit in some of them.  They grew up in the Church of Christ.  Through the teaching ministry of the church they learned about Christ and the way of salvation.  Most of them went to Christian Schools built and financed by faithful members of the church.  Some of them likely benefited from scholarships provided from funds contributed by faithful Christians.  Some now teach in those schools provided by members of the Church.  Others preach for congregations built by dedicated members of the Church.  They, because of their love and loyalty to Christ, sacrificed to bring those churches to maturity.

Now these folks devote themselves to speaking and writing about the Church of Christ in the most uncharitable way.  They ridicule her faith.  They criticize and poke fun at her sacred worship.  They dismiss her accomplishments.  They magnify her failures, even the slightest of them.  They bash her past leaders.  They praise her enemies and diligently work to undermine her foundations so they can rebuild the church in their own image and likeness.

Michael Moore has prospered and became famous by his vile efforts.  Many of our change agents, by worldly standards, seem to be doing well.  They have large, flourishing congregations and worldly recognition.  But both Mr. Moore and our champions of change have yet to meet the Judge whose decision really matters.  Attacks against the Church of Christ are really attacks against the Bride of Christ.

To ridicule the faith and worship set forth on the pages of the New Testament is to despise the will of the Founder, Head and Savior of the Church.  To encourage and praise the enemies of the Church is to encourage the enemies of the body of Christ.  To poke fun at members of Christ’s Church is to show disrespect for God’s children.  Such conduct will not go unnoticed or unrewarded by the Judge of all.  The day will come when all will stand before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account for the deeds done in this life.  II Corinthians 5:10.  What a shock it will be when He who is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8); whose word will never pass away (Matthew 24:35); whose Kingdom cannot be shaken (Hebrews 12:28) pronounces judgment on them for crimes against His Church.

May God have mercy on those who have treated the Lord’s Church like Michael Moore has treated his homeland.
